This beautiful early Weller Louwelsa candlestem stands 8" high by 5.5" across the handle by 5" in diameter at its widest, and 1.75" at the rim. It has a shapely statuesque candlestem form, akin to a vase with a candle cup at the top, and a sloping handle on one side. It is exquisitely decorated with lush Jonquil blossoms and leaves, in gorgeous reddish brown and yellow ochre hues, which presents as if they were floating on the surface of a rich standard glaze, which is a deep, rich reddish brown, just beautiful. This candlestem was decorated by Minnie Helmick Mitchell (1876-1902) and it is signed by Mitchell on the lower side of the artwork as shown in the photos. Mitchell died in 1902, so this likely dates to the 1890s-1902. It is marked Louwelsa Weller on the base, along with an incised '247', presumably a shape number, with a '4' below. This beauty is in excellent condition, with an old, but very good chip restoration to the backside rim of the candle cup. If you appreciate Weller's Louwelsa standard glazes, and Minnie Mitchell's work, you will love this beautifully decorated candlestem!
