This early organic Volkmar vase stands 8" high by 3.5" in diameter at the rim, and 5.5" in diameter at its widest, a wholesome form. This pot likely dates to the Volkmar Kiln dates of 1903-1911 when Charles and his son Leon worked together for a time. I'd lean to earlier in the period, c1903-1905, given its form and glaze. This pot has a very handsome mustard matte glaze, which bears the sins of a handmade vessel, fraught with numerous glaze effects, including bubbling and glaze bursts, and a spot of green glaze in the bottom interior. Other glaze nuances can be seen in the photos. This pot has a nice heft and feels great in-hand. There was a hairline crack on the underside, which was mended and disguished, not obvious for its location, but can be found with close inspection. It makes a great organic Arts & Crafts presentation. This vase is well-marked with the Volkmar 'V' on the base, and guaranteed to be vintage Volkmar Pottery. This more than 100 year-old pot presents quite handsomely.

Volkmar Kilns – Metuchen – 1903-1911

After closing the Volkmar Pottery in Corona NY in 1902 Charles & Leon Volkmar opened the Volkmar Kilns in 1903 in Metuchen. Both of the Volkmars taught pottery & glazing in Metuchen. Leon took over the pottery program at the Pennsylvania Museum of Industrial Art but continued to work with his father. Leon left in 1911 to start Durant Kilns with Jean Rice. Charles continued until his death in 1914. Typically a matte glaze in an arts & crafts fashion marked with a V.
