This Royal Doulton 'Sung' vase stands 6.5" high by 3" in diameter, and 1" at the rim. It has a classic and shapely form, swelling at the midline, and tapering at the wavy rim, a beautiful Asian-inspired form. The 'Sung' line was developed around 1920 by artists Charles Noke and Fred Moore. It is flambe-glazed in a stormy red, sang-de-boeuf or oxblood glaze, with rich, green and blue churning in the red, shading light and dark, in a fabulous galactic-like constellation presentation. This vessel is marked Royal Doulton, and dates to the early 1920s. It bears the green Lion and Crown ink stamp, along with the notation 'Flambe', shape 1613 ink stamp as well as a number impression. It is in original, no apologies. This impressive Asian-inspired, red/green and blue combination flambe-glazed vessel is stunning.
At the turn of the 20th century, Doulton's chief designer, Charles Noke (1858-1941) and his colleagues experimented with firing techniques and metallic oxides in their pursuit of re-developing these highly ornamental transmutation glazes inspired by ancient Chinese antecedents. Their tests and trials resulted in sophisticated patterns and color combinations unique to every example of Doulton's artistic Flambe ware.
