This Rookwood Yellow Standard Glaze early hand-thrown vase stands rather proudly at 10.5" high by 4.25" in diameter at the hip, tapering to 3" diameter at the flared rim. It has an early and statuesque form, shape 640, designed by Pitts Harrison Burt. According to Peck, this vessel is hand-thrown. It was decorated by Albert Robert Valentien, whose tenure at the Rookwood Pottery was from 1881-1905. He decorated this vessel with exquisitely executed trumpet or bell-flower blossoms and leaves with exacting precision. The glaze colors are gorgeous in a light yellow standard glaze, shading to a rich chocolate brown from the mid-body to the base, simply beautiful. This beauty is well marked and dated with the well-known Rookwood logo, dating this vase to1894, with eight flames above the logo. Valentien's initials/cipher 'A.R.V.' are noted on the base, along with the Rookwood paper label and shape number 640. The paper label may be covering the 'Y' for Yellow Standard Glaze. This shapely vessel is in amazingly original factory condition, with some no harm factory minute pinholes at the inner rim and minor grazing on the underside of the vase (likely from use, adding water for flowers), and just minimal wear from handling. The shadows in the photos are from camera glare, the glaze finish is very bright and uniform. This large and impressive vase decorated by Albert Valentien makes a stunningly beautiful presentation!
