This handsome Rookwood Carved Mat vessel stands a mere 4" high by 3.5" in diameter, a small, yet fine example of Arts & Crafts styling. It has a simple form with a rolled rim opening with leaves and cherry stems spilling over the rim. It was decorated by Sarah Elizabeth Coyne (1876-1939), called 'Sallie'. Her tenure at the Rookwood Pottery was from 1891-1936, essentially spending her career with the Rookwood Pottery. This vase is carved with an outline of cherries and leaves in a nice organic, drippy glaze decoration, with green leaves over a soft brown and mocha ground, which thins at the high points, accenting the design handsomely. This pot is shape number 942F, and it is dated 1905, a nice early Carved Mat example, along with the standard Rookwood cipher on the base. It bears Coyne's cojoined initials cipher 'S.E.C.' on the base. This small, yet handsome vessel is in original factory condition, no apologies.
