This Rookwood Painted Mat vessel stands 7.5" high by 3.25" in diameter. It has a pleasing bulb form with a rolled rim. It was decorated by Charles Stewart Todd (1886-1950), whose tenure at the Rookwood Pottery was from 1910-1922. This vase is decorated with a rich vineyard motif of grapes and leaves at the collar, a perfect Arts & Crafts motif, which lays on this vessel beautifully. It is glazed in a rosey brown ground, which has great depth and character, and is covered in a flat deep brown, almost black flat mat in the upper third, with the artwork in beautifully complementary mat colors, and finished in a satin mat on the lower third. This rich-looking pot is shape number 1659E, and it is dated 1911, a nice early vessel for Todd's tenure, and in a Painted Mat glaze, which was only produced from 1901-1911. It bears the standard Rookwood cipher on the base, and a 'V' for vellum. It bears Todd's initials 'C.S.T.' on the base. There is an impressed '1' on the base, very close to the base edge, so perhaps the number was part of a signature Painted Mat marking, which often had two digits, along with a 'Z' This vase is in original factory condition, with an 'X' for a glaze indentation near the base edge as shown in the photos. It is smooth to touch. This Todd-decorated pot presents quite handsomely.
