This early Rookwood Decorated Mat vase stands 6.5" high by 4.5" in diameter at the hip, and 1.25" at the rim. It has a shapely and classic form, a hand-thrown form, according to the Rookwood references. It was decorated by Miss Clara Christina Lindeman, whose tenure at Rookwood was from 1898-1907. She decorated this vessel with holly leaves and red berries in exacting precision. The glaze decoration has a rather ethereal presentation, over a gorgeous cream to charcoal ground, with complementary colors in the decoration, and finished to a satin mat. This beauty is well marked and dated 1903, along with its shape number 861, and Lindeman's initials/cipher 'C.C.L.' are noted on the base, along with the Rookwood logo. This beautiful vessel is in original factory condition, with some thin glaze at the rim, and generalized factory crazing. This hand-thrown vase makes a beautiful presentation!
