This pitcher, called 'Carolina Cameo', stands 5.5" high by 5,5" across the handle by 4.5" in diameter. It was made by Catawba River Pottery, in a collabortive effort of two women in NC. This pitcher was thrown, glazed and fired by M. Marjorie Pittman, a potter from Marion, NC, and decorated by Judy Petrie of Conover, NC. These 'Carolina Cameo' pots are classic southern folk art, made in the old tradition of the 1930s Catawba Valley pots of old, like the pots of the master Walter B. Stephen of Pisgah Forest Pottery fame. This pitcher has a classic form with a handle at its side.It is glazed in a handsome and organic ash alkaline glaze, in deep blue, which covers the pot. The decoration is hand-applied white slip that is layered to cover its translucency. Finally, it is clear gloss-glazed on the interior to provide a watertight seal, and the exterior is finished to satin mat sheen. This pitcher is well marked on the base, dated 1990, and it bears the mark 'M Pittman' below the artwork. Judy Petrie's initials are not noted, so perhaps this is standard marking for Catawba River Studios. This pot is in factory original condition, with the usual glaze nuances of hand-made pots. If you like southern folk art pots, or those made in the old tradition of the Catawba Valley potters, this pitcher would make a very handsome addition to your collection for sure! The last two images are shots from a magazine article about Catawba River Pottery. Another potter and dear friend, Rodney Leftwich, author of the book on Pisgah Pottery, whose work in this field is legend, is also highlighted.
