This scarce, if not rare Jersey City Pottery vase stands 4.75" high by 9" across by 4.25" wide. Jersey City Pottery opened in Jersey City, NJ around 1827. It went through many name changes over the years. This pillow vase is not dated, but is likely c 1880s, during a period when the pottery was known as American Pottery Company. According to Barber, the I.V.W. mark began being used around 1880. This vase has a beautiful and classic swollen pillow form, with a generous palette. It has gorgeous white blossoms, with yellow/brown centers, rather loose and flowing in their presentation with green leaves. The artwork is beautifully executed. The glaze colors, over a deep orangy-brown transitional shaded ground, are especially rich and vibrant on this vase. The rim is encrusted in a beautiful gold leaf gilding, a nice accent. It is marked with the IVW ink stamp on the base. This vase, which is more than 140 years old, is in original condition, with some minor factory crazing, and just normal wear from handling over the years. This vintage beauty makes a wonderfully wholesome presentation!
