This handsome art tile measures 6" square by 3/8" thick. It is a classically hand-painted scene of a Falconer in traditional dress releasing a Falcon in a meadow setting. The back side presents like a Minton-Hollins art tile, and it is hand signed by the artist 'H.P. Steel, and dated 1889', no other marks. It is glazed in very handsome complementary colors over a soft ivory/blue ground. We do not know anything about the artist H.P. Steel, but he was accomplished, not an amateur. The facial features of the Falconer are very well executed. The glazes remain quite vibrant at over 130+ years, and they are fired glazes, not cold-painted. This tile is in very good condition with just minor edge surface chips/nicks as can be in the photos. There are no cracks or other blemishes.
