This very handsome Brayton Laguna figural Nubian or Blackamoor stands a monumental 15" high by 9" across by 8" wide, the largest of Brayton's Blackamoor designs. The Blackamoor figure was a very popular mid-century modern design promoted in Italian art in the 40s and 50s. The motif emerged as an artistic response to the European encounter with the Moors, dark-skinned Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East who came to occupy various parts of Europe during the Middle Ages. This figural Nubian is decorated in a very regal costume with a jeweled turban and vestment, an ornate belt, and brilliantly glazed slippers. His costume is glazed in a nice taupe and green combination glaze in rich and vibrant colors. This figure is marked with the Brayton Laguna ink stamp on one foot as shown in the photos, difficult to read, but guaranteed to be vintage Brayton Laguna Pottery, c1950. This figure was well cared for and has professional restoration to a few flecks/small chips on the edge of the basket rim. There was a glaze nick on one turban jewel and another on his upper lip, all small issues and invisibly restored If you like classic Brayton Laguna California pottery from the 50s, this figural makes an awesome mid-century modern presentation.
