This Rookwood Production vase stands 7" high by 4" across the handles by 2.25" in diameter at the rim. It has a pleasing Asian-inspired form, with small strapped loop handles at its sides. This vessel was designed by Kataro Shirayamadani, one of Rookwood's most accomplished artists, who spent his career at the Rookwood Pottery. The vase is covered from tip-to-toe with Cherry Blossoms, in relief, much like a Cherry Blossom tree when in full bloom. It is glazed in an organic mat reddish-brown glaze that thins at the high points, accentuating the design most handsomely. It has a wonderfully masculine feel to it, yet quite elegant in its presentation. This vase is well marked and it is dated 1923, shape number 2681, along with the numbers '9499' in the same slip in which the vessel is glazed, and it appears to be fired in, a curious notation. Perhaps Shirayamadani made this as a gift for someone, although it does not bear his initials. This vase is in factory original condition, no apologies. If you collect Rookwood Pottery, this is one of the best production pots I've encountered.
