This Folkart Birdbath ornament was made at Crystal King's Seagrove Pottery, whose wares are typical salt-glazed pots, with a wonderful array of designs by Crystal King (family-taught potter) and many of her family members. I've been to Seagrove, but not to King's Pottery, but the next visit to Seagrove will include a stop on Highway 705, for sure! I contacted Crystal for verification that the birdbath was indeed, one of her creations. She told me that this birdbath was made by her grandmother, and that her son is actually making birdbaths today. This birdbath stands 6.5" high by 6.5" in diameter at the rim, by 4" at the base. It has a handbuilt form, with two birds perched on the edge of the birdbath, one blackbird and one red, likely a Cardinal. The birdbath is glazed in a simple brown glaze, and the best part is that the clear glaze is pooled in the center of the birdbath creating a wonderful crystallized water-filled effect, very clever. This vessel is finished to a high gloss. It is well-marked on the base, 'C. King Pottery', along with the initials 'P.B'. This wonderfully handbuilt Folkart birdbath is in original condition, no apologies. We celebrate vintage and contemporary art pottery, and particularly potters from the Seagrove area in the Carolinas where each creation is made by potters with clay in their veins, passed on by generations of potters whose ideas are their own...true pottery souls!
